We are already accustomed to frequent breakdowns of washing machines, microwave ovens, dishwashers, air conditioners, vacuum cleaners, and refrigerators. But relatively simple and well-designed technical products rarely fail. Therefore, the situation when the gas column is ignited and goes out for many users will be unexpected, right? This type of equipment belongs to the category of reliable and durable devices.

But is it worth it to worry and call the master? In this article, we will talk about the causes of such a breakdown, look at common and rare situations. We will figure out how to independently adjust the operation of the heater and when it is better not to do this, but immediately consult a specialist. We also give recommendations on how to prevent malfunctions.

Causes of column attenuation after ignition

When identifying the cause of the malfunction, it is important to pay attention to two points: how does the ignition fade out (whether extraneous sounds are heard); this happens immediately after ignition or already in the process of burning.

Reason # 1 - failure of the flame ionization sensor

If the device turns on and goes out, the ionization sensor is “to blame” for 70% of this.

This element is constantly in contact with the flame. Ions generated during combustion are attracted to the sensor and produce current. If there are enough ions, the apparatus works. If there are few of them, the column does not function.

The ionization sensor is a thermocouple that is heated by a flame. It is also called a gas sensor because it protects the device from leakage when the burner is turned off.

Symptoms:

  • the burner went out after 3-5 seconds after ignition;
  • when restarted, the device lasts longer;
  • It is worth starting the device several times and it is already functioning normally;
  • problems only appear after a long break.

Inspect the wiring that runs from the part to the control board. Why check all the contacts. Then we unscrew the retaining screws, place the heating electrode in the hottest point of the flame.

This technique can extend the life of the sensor for another year. If everything is OK with the contacts and the connection, you need to replace the element.

Reason # 2 - the water unit membrane has worn out

A polymer component must have sufficient elasticity. Over time, this property is lost - the element becomes stiff, cracking, overgrows with scale.

If the cell becomes unusable, the heater will go out. Need to inspect and replace the membrane if necessary, on a more durable silicone.

Reason # 3 - the wick is clogged with dust

In models with a pilot light, this part is often clogged. The flame becomes weak, a yellow tint appears. But a change in the color of the flame may indicate a lack of air in the gas-air mixture.

The result - the device is either not at all capable of setting the burner on fire, or fulfills its function after the receipt of a large amount of fuel. In the latter case, characteristic cotton is heard.

To clean the element, you will need two screwdrivers (Phillips, slot) and an adjustable wrench.

The algorithm is as follows:

  1. Remove the case - pull out the adjustment knobs, unscrew the bolts in the corners from below, lift and remove the cover.
  2. We turn off the tube of the thrust sensor and the one that brings the fuel to the wick.
  3. We unscrew the screws and disassemble the design.
  4. We clean the nozzle, blow out the tee, collect.

There may be a blockage in the draft sensor, which makes the igniter smoke. After removing dust, dirt, the igniter should burn with a stable blue flame.

After cleaning, the appliance may make a little noise. Sound is made by air, which is sucked through the slots in the wick guide casing. There is no danger, but noise can be eliminated if you slightly tighten the wick with screws

If desired, all parts of the structure can be washed. But do not forget to dry them well before assembly.

Why does the column turn off during operation?

If the geyser ignites normally, but for some reason goes out during operation, this may indicate that the instrument’s security system is functioning properly.

In the design of the column there is a sensor that works when the internal temperature rises. Inside the system there are two plates that repel each other, cut off the power supply, turn off the column. This happens when the internal temperature rises quickly and uncontrollably.

The gas column automation system includes three sensors: traction, flame, overheating. Plus two valves: gas and discharge. They ensure safe operation of the device.

You can check the sensors for resistance. A working part shows an infinity sign. When another value is displayed, call the wizard.

If the device works long enough, and then turns off, check the settings. Sometimes users accidentally set automatic shutdown after a certain time.

What else leads to shutdown:

  • poor water or gas pressure;
  • broken contact between the thermocouple and the solenoid valve (you need to strip the contacts, tighten the connection);
  • oxidation of the contacts of the power supply when the device clicks, but does not light up.

It’s useful to check the batteries. Standard replacement of power supplies held once every six months. The batteries last longer.

Thrust bad or completely absent

The accumulation of combustion products is most often associated with clogged chimney soot, soot, garbage. When the draft is absent or insufficient, mining is not carried out.

It is important to remember that the flame may go out due to external factors - gusts of wind, for example. The draft in the mine increases or decreases under the influence of a draft.

You can clean the chimney through a “pocket” located 25 cm lower from it. If such manipulations did not help, call the communal services.

Soot accumulation on the heat exchanger

The heat exchanger accumulates soot, soot, scale during operation. When it clogs, the color of the flame changes from yellow to blue.

How to clean the heat exchanger:

  1. Remove the casing.
  2. Unscrew the screws holding the casing.
  3. We block the water supply.
  4. Open the mixer to drain hot water.
  5. Disconnect the heat exchanger threads and the tap. You need a stand - water may leak.
  6. We prepare a solution of hydrochloric acid (3-5%).
  7. Take a 1/2 ”pipe or use a hose.
  8. We connect one end to the input, the other to the output.
  9. Pour the solution into the funnel. If foam appears during flushing, this is normal.
  10. As soon as a strong head appears at the output, we stop the procedure.

Be sure to wear gloves during operation. After descaling, thoroughly rinse the heat exchanger from acid residues.

If defects in the tubes were noticed during the cleaning process, then heat exchanger repair.

To clean the heat exchanger from scale, you can use citric acid (for 700 ml of water you will need 80 g of powder). Boil the radiator in the solution for half an hour, leave it to cool and rinse

Cleaning work is recommended once a year. Regular service help the device to function normally.

Clogged shower head and hose

It happens that the geyser turns on and for some reason immediately goes out when switching to a shower. This may be due to clogging of the holes of the watering can.

You need to unscrew the watering can, clean and rinse the holes. Soaking metal elements in a solution of citric acid is also effective.

Scum on the watering can is formed due to the increased hardness of tap water in some regions. To prevent this from happening, install filters or buy a faucet with shower equipped with an integrated anti-scale system

The next part, due to which the wick can go out, is a shower hose. If he gets confused or clogged, the pressure head decreases and the column goes out.

The mixer may break or become clogged. It is necessary to disassemble it, check, clean if necessary.

At the entrance to the plumbing unit there is a filter that traps small debris. It is also useful to periodically clean it. To do this, unscrew the screws, remove the element, rinse, clean with a brush with citric acid.

Other sources of the problem

Consider other issues causing the column attenuation problem after firing up.

Extinction of the wick may be due to the presence of powerful ventilation near the column. The exhaust air is drawn into the ventilation, which leads to attenuation. It is necessary to turn off the ventilation or fasten its power to the minimum for the duration of the gas heater.

For the same reason, do not place a powerful hood near the column. During its operation, sensors can be triggered, diagnosing a malfunction.

Sometimes the reason is hidden in the absence of natural ventilation. You need to open the window or install supply valve.

The wick can also be extinguished in models with piezo ignition. The button must be held for at least 10 seconds.

Smart gas water heater
Smart geysers may not ignite due to a burnt out control board. They are sensitive to the quality of the electric power supply, so they need to be connected through the stabilizer and do not turn off at night

Also, during the operation of the heater, it is not recommended to mix hot and cold streams. This leads to a drop in pressure in the line and the attenuation of the wick.

The problem is solved by adjusting the indicators to a comfortable level and reducing the pressure with a special handle.If you still have to mix water, you need to leave the main hot stream.

Attenuation can cause a malfunction of the solenoid valve or servomotor. Only a wizard call will help here.

Troubleshooting Methods

When buying a device, you should pay attention to the indicators of the minimum water pressure, which is required for the normal functioning of the device. Passport data must be compared with indicators water pressure in the apartment.

For the column to work properly, you must:

  • once a year or more often carry out preventive work;
  • inspect the chimney a couple of times a year and clean it if necessary;
  • clean parts from scale, soot;
  • provide adequate ventilation.
